The drug is directly linked to a lower percentage of major cardiovascular events[i]
The product incorporates the presence of ezetimibe which, in combination with rosuvastatin, can lower LDL cholesterol by more than 59%
This launch expands and reinforces Ferrer's current portfolio of therapeutic solutions to address alterations in lipid metabolism
Barcelona, February 25, 2021 – When we talk about high blood cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) it is almost always due to an increase in bad cholesterol (LDL). Elevated LDL-cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (mainly myocardial infarction and stroke). Hypercholesterolemia is an underdiagnosed, undertreated, and undercontrolled disease[ii]. It is currently one of the main cardiovascular risk factors and is the cause of 8% of all deaths in the country, 56% of cases of ischemic heart disease and 18% of cerebrovascular disease[iii].
To address this pathology, Ferrer has launched Alzil Plus*, a prescription medicine indicated as a dietary adjuvant for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolaemia in adult patients as a replacement therapy in patients adequately controlled with the monocomponents, administered concomitantly, at the same dose level as in the fixed-dose combination. but as separate medicines.
In addition, based on a patient's baseline LDL-cholesterol number and cardiovascular risk category, the combination of rosuvastatin with ezetimibe is recommended when the response to prior statin therapy at the maximum tolerated dose has not achieved therapeutic goals[iv].
According to Albert Cortada, director of the prescription medicines area of Ferrer Spain, "we are proud to be able to continue offering solutions to treat cardiovascular diseases, which represent the leading cause of death in our country[v]. With this drug, we make available to all people who need it one of the most effective oral lipid-lowering agents on the market, which helps to significantly reduce LDL-C levels and, consequently, contributes to reducing major cardiovascular events. This launch reinforces the unwavering commitment that Ferrer has been showing in the area of dyslipidemia for more than twenty years."
Alzil Plus, available in two presentations, strengthens Ferrer's portfolio of products to treat dyslipidemia, adding to the existing Omacor (market leader in prescription Omega 3), a drug for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia and Alzil (rosuvastatin), the most powerful statin for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
