Barcelona, February 20, 2025 – Ferrer has revalidated its status as a B Corp company, international recognition obtained by companies that have impact business models and that comply with high social, environmental and community standards. On this occasion, we have added 136.4 points, making us the pharmaceutical laboratory with the highest score in the world. In addition, we are the third company (in any sector) with the most points on the planet among those with a turnover of more than 500 million euros per year.
According to Mario Rovirosa, CEO of Ferrer, "this result is a reflection that we take very seriously our purpose of using the business to fight for social justice, as all the people in the company work daily to make us one of the best companies, not in the world, but for the world. However, despite the enormous joy we feel for this recognition, we believe that it is not enough and that we have the moral obligation to do more and better, because the situation of social injustice in the world is urgent and only with the sum of all we will be able to face the current and future challenges".
In the words of Raimon Puigjaner, president of B Lab Spain, "inequality and the climate crisis represent the great causes of social injustice, demand a structural transformation of our system and represent the focus of action of the B Corp Movement. In a context in which the private sector accounts for up to 80% of global GDP and 90% of global employment, its role in such a systemic transformation is clearly unavoidable. And it must do so using its main asset: its value proposition. The greatest contribution that companies can and should make in building a more just, equitable and regenerative – more sustainable – world is to put the business model at their service. Not only is it morally desirable, but the market tends to value it more and more."
To become part of the B Corp movement, a company must achieve a minimum of 80 points after receiving an exhaustive evaluation around five areas of action: governance, customers, environment, employees and community. In 2022 Ferrer obtained a score of 100.6 points and became the first Spanish pharmaceutical company to be part of the B Corp community and, now, three years later, it has improved its score by 35%.
During this time, Ferrer has carried out more than 100 initiatives that have contributed to increasing its score in each of the areas of action. However, the most significant increase has occurred in the Community area, going from 13.2 to 38 points, mainly caused by the recognition of the Donations Impact Business Model (MNI), and the improvement in environmental and social management in the supply chain.
The Donation Impact Business Model recognises the commitment to donate at least 20% of the company's total profits every year and to allocate at least 10% to Ferrer Foundations and the rest to other social and environmental entities. In fact, in the last 4 years, Ferrer has gone beyond this commitment and has allocated, on average, 40% of its profits to projects with a positive impact.
This model is in addition to the Health model that was already recognized in the initial certification, given that Ferrer, as a pharmaceutical company, focuses on offering transformative therapeutic solutions to those with debilitating diseases of low prevalence, especially in the areas of vascular and interstitial lung diseases and neurological disorders.
The announcement of the new result was made at a protest event held in Barcelona, at street level, within the framework of the World Day of Social Justice, and was attended by Sergi Ferrer-Salat, president of Ferrer, Mario Rovirosa, CEO of Ferrer and Raimon Puigjaner, president of B Lab Spain, in addition to the presence of other B Corp companies. several NGOs, companies from other sectors and a large representation of Ferrer employees.
During the event, Mario Rovirosa called for companies to be part of the solution and not the problem: "At Ferrer we are convinced that business success must go hand in hand with generating a positive impact, both on society and on the planet. For this reason, some time ago we undertook a transformation that took us beyond traditional business activity, becoming an entity committed to action for social change. This approach has not only reinforced our identity and purpose, but has also shown that sustainability and profitability can coexist without compromise. Our business model demonstrates that it is possible to generate economic value while actively contributing to building a fairer and more sustainable world."
