Bringing ALSton the dragon to life to raise awareness about ALS

Coinciding with World Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Day on June 21, the Phantasticals campaign adds a new fantastic creature with the aim of raising awareness about ALS, a rare, neurodegenerative, progressive disease that affects the motor neurons of the brain.

The new character, a dragon named ALSton (ALS), joins the first creatures that Ferrer unveiled on the occasion of World Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Day on May 5.

In this campaign, the Phantastical creatures appear as beings characterized by being very rare and extraordinary, unique and, of course, fantastic. Along with the qualities that make these creatures special, they all have something in common: they are strong, resilient and often go unnoticed. The same goes for people living with rare, serious and debilitating diseases such as pulmonary hypertension and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

As Oscar Pérez, Head of Marketing, Market Access and Business Development at Ferrer, points out , "the Phantasticals campaign is aligned with Ferrer's purpose of generating a positive impact on society, giving visibility to a series of pathologies about which there is a lot of ignorance and little public awareness of their effects. After putting our effort into raising awareness about pulmonary hypertension and providing our support to people living with the disease, we are now focusing on making ALS visible, a disease in which we are also working to provide solutions from the field of pharmaceutical research".

Through the www.phantasticals.com website , the Phantasticals explain the main aspects of the different pathologies, emphasizing their low prevalence, symptoms, diagnosis and possible treatments.

In addition, the portal includes statements and testimonies from people living with the disease, so that citizens understand the difficulties they face on a daily basis and the challenges that they, their environment and health systems face .

Join the campaign
To involve citizens in the campaign, this interactive Instagram filter has also been developed with which, when winking, dozens of ALStons dragons appear on the screen. Although ALS is a progressive disease, the ability to wink is largely preserved and people living with the disease can use this gesture to communicate even in later stages. For each photo published on social networks mentioning Ferrer with the hashtag #WeBelieveInPhantasticALS, the laboratory will donate €1 to the European organisation of ALS professionals and patients (EUpALS), an entity that supports the campaign, up to a maximum of €5,000.

Commitment Beyond Awareness: ADORE Clinical Trial
A further example of Ferrer's commitment to people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is in the launch of the Phase III clinical trial, ADORE, to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the investigational drug, FNP122, in the treatment of ALS.

The study, which is currently in the recruitment phase, is an international, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either FNP122 or placebo in a 2-to-1 ratio. FNP122 is an oral formulation of edaravone, a compound that can prevent oxidative stress at the cellular level.
